In 1976 #GeorgiaOKeeffe's Ram’s Head, White Hollyhock—Hills juxtaposes the view from her New Mexico home Ghost Ranch, a flower from her garden, and one of many animal skulls she collected on her walks in the desert. ⇨ After moving permanently to the Southwest in 1948, O’Keeffe displayed animal bones and skulls in her two New Mexico homes, alongside her collections of weathered tree branches and riverbed stones. The bones also served as favorite props in many photographic portraits that were taken of her in her later decades. ⇨ O’Keeffe occasionally hung an animal skull directly on a wall, giving it the status of a painting or a religious icon. Most of all, their spare, organic forms complemented the unified aesthetic of her art and her carefully curated life. #okeeffemodern
