Happy Log Cabin Day! Supporters of William Henry Harrison's 1840 presidential campaign tried to broaden their candidate's appeal to the "common man" by rallying around symbols of frontier democracy: hatchets, hard cider, and log cabins. ?

This particular cabin, dating from the 1840s, was probably hoisted on a pole and carried in political parades. The cabin is just one of the many artifacts from political campaigns that will be going on display in the museum's new, permanent exhibition "American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith," opening June 28.
