A pair of East-Asian native mandarin ducks (Aix galericulata) at Tsuta Bird Sanctuary in Towada-Hachimantai National Park. The male on the left is easily identified by his red bill and bright plumage. The female on the right sports largely gray plumage, with a white ring around each eye.
In spring, mandarin ducks return to breed by the waterside in Tsuta Bird Sanctuary. Their preferred diet is acorns, and it's said their young leave the nest by leaping out of hollows in trees!
