Born Phylis Lee Isley in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1919 to parents who operated a traveling tent show, a chance encounter with producer David O. Selznick, who overheard one of her theater auditions, would transform Phylis into “Jennifer Jones.” Jones went on to become a queen of metamorphosis, shining on screen whether playing a peasant girl who has visions of the Virgin Mary in “The Song of Bernadette” (1943), or the brazen Pearl Chavez in “Duel in the Sun” (1946).
