Mahabodhi Temple in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar is one of the four Buddhist pilgrimage sites, being the place where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. Included in this holy place are a 51 metre tall square-based pagoda, and the Sri Mahabodhi tree which the Buddha sat under when he became enlightened. The temple complex became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
