“I had this idea to make the announcement card for a show I was having with the info written across this sort of androgynous middle-aged woman’s face. In my mind at the time, it was about the inherent humiliation of being represented, so the announcement was a humiliation for both the artist and the subject. So I wrote all the info for the show across her face, but then I didn’t like it, so I blacked it all out and then I liked it so much better. The reciprocal humiliation felt much more extreme.” —John Currin.
