“I’ve been hiking since I was 19. For future generations, I would hope that the Owyhee could stay the way it is now. Over 30 year, I’ve seen a lot of wild places come under siege from outside development. I think that public input and keeping a knowledge of what’s going on in the areas that you like to hike in is really important. It’s a real blow to our imagination as a people in this country that we can’t see the value of saving a place like this or protecting it.” Mary Kwart always dreamed of hiking long distances. At 64 years-young, this former firefighter examines the wealth of opportunity the Owyhee affords to all recreationists, and why she believes in inclusive, collaborative, local grassroots protection efforts for everyone’s benefit.
