#BarkleyHendricks was known for painting compelling and thoughtful portraits of people who, like him, were stylish, composed, and black. When two of our curators interviewed the artist at his home in 2013, they noticed a magnet on his fridge of Eduard Charlemont’s “The Moorish Chief,” from the Museum’s collection. Hendricks, who was from #Philadelphia, said he liked the picture and explained how he saw his own work as part of that same long history of portraiture and figure painting. In honor of Hendricks, who recently passed away, we have installed his painting “Miss T” adjacent to “The Moorish Chief” in gallery 155.
