My yearning towards the north was enhanced by yet another thing. In Yamagata, Tohoku region, I encountered iwai-bandori, a type of traditional backpads used to carry various items for wedding celebration, made of straw and beautifully decorated with interwoven colored cloths and threads. I was so fascinated by them and started to deeply immerse myself in this traditional handwork of Tohoku. I impressed by the technique and aesthetics of their handwork.
ここ一年、私を夢中にさせ続ける山形の”ばんどり”。荷物を背負う時の背負子です。婚礼の時の嫁入り道具を運ぶ”祝いばんどり”は肩当をつけたり、色布や糸を編み込んであり特に美しいのです。2017SSでもFWでもここから沢山の編み地が生まれました。
