Helen Cook wore these during World War I as Chief Operator of the Army Signal Corps Female Telephone Operators. The mud of France, where she served, was a constant, relentless presence in the lives of women and soldiers in #WW1.
When Cook donated her boots to the @スミソニアン博物館, she wrote that they were “pretty disreputable; the mud of France is on them.” 100 years later, some of that mud is still embedded in the soles of her boots.

Join us on Twitter on Tuesday, April 11 from 1-2 p.m. ET for Q&A about women's roles during the war. We'll also try to answer any questions in the comments here.
