Two new exhibitions—“Storytelling in Bali: Paintings from the Bateson-Mead Collection” and “Monsoon: Indian Paintings of the Rainy Season”—open this Saturday, April 1, in the Ahmanson Building’s South and Southeast Asian galleries. Many of the stories in “Storytelling in Bali” are drawn from epic narratives of Hindu and Buddhist mythology that were transmitted from India in the early Common Era, and subsequently translated into local legends. “Monsoon” explores India’s rainy season and how the rains have long been celebrated in various mythologies, rituals, communal observances, and poetic expressions.
