As we move forward in one direction ?? Forward. For anyone confused or in wonder why this post went up this is why. Soca was even less than 20 years ago considered as a music to refrain from by many other cultures. It was not allowed to be played in many venues even right in NYC up to less than 15 years ago. I can talk about it because I was there to see and many others who are in the music now. Many radio stations wasn't even allowed to mention the word much less play the music or even interview an artiste of the genre. Now it is played unapologetically by many many other selectors of other genres. We have a very powerful story as a people and culture but we have not yet harnessed the fact that we should stand by the story and fully tell the story without apology. When a sound system like @MIGHTY CROWN along with many others who've watched and seen the growth of the music plays it on their platform with a pride and respect it is in itself a testimony of how far we have come and we can use that to measure how far we have to go. Years ago if a hip hop or reggae selector chose to play a Soca track it would be 1 or maybe 2 now they are playing even 25 - 30 minute sets. Big up @irishandchin whose focus and platform is reggae but they constantly use the medium to show the placement and positioning of Soca wherever they're in a venue and Soca plays. Truth be told they don't have to do it but they do it because they also respect good works and good music. We have a good music now we have to all focus on the proper business of it to get it where we think it should be. We need to stop thinking what we have is good enough to go, even if it is we still have to push as though we want better even if we don't. Give thanks. ??
