#ArtWords: ‘Destruction’ is the act of destroying or mutilating a work of art. During the English Reformation in the sixteenth century attacks on artworks were carried out for religious reasons and this is known as iconoclasm. In the twentieth century the women’s suffrage movement attacked paintings for political purposes in order to effect change. These acts revealed that destructing an art object does not necessarily eradicate it, but replaces it with something else, a concept which inspired a number of artists to use destruction as a creative force.
