It's time for #TrilobiteTuesday! Whatever your level of interest in the trilobite world, one thing should become readily apparent: these incredible fossils display a surprising diversity of color. Depending on where they've been found and what minerals have most influenced their fossilization process, the rock-hard shells of these ancient arthropods can appear as black, white, tan, or brown, with other hues like red, orange or yellow making occasional appearances. Some even present mottled shell patterns akin to calico print. Virtually every color contained within Earth's natural palette can be found represented in the calcified remains of a trilobite's preserved exoskeleton. These hues can even help identify where a fossil was found. From the golden tones that distinguish species drawn from near Russia's Wolchow River (like this spiny Boedaspis ensifer) to the ghostly white that defines those found in Portugal's Valongo formation to the charcoal grey seen in specimens from upstate New York's Rochester Shale, colors can say a lot about a trilobite’s origins.
