It's time for #TrilobiteTuesday! Situated near the small Portuguese town of Arouca, is a fascinating Ordovician-age trilobite site. It's not that the species strikingly showcased within this quarry's smooth slate blocks are particularly unusual–in fact, virtually all of the fossils found here have been previously reported from other European Paleozoic locales throughout France, Spain, and the Czech Republic. What makes these ancient arthropods, drawn from the rich layers of the Valongo Formation, scientifically significant are the dimensions these trilobites, such as this 6-inch Pateraspis, once attained.
