According to Mikako Sawada, an editor based in Kyoto who writes about Japanese arts and culture, "noren" fulfill several roles: they act as a partition and a decoration, but also carry out a more prosaic function not unlike a billboard. "By hanging curtains at the entrance," Sawada says, "the thin cloth separates the inside from the outside of the shop and it also elegantly covers the door, which enhances curiosity and expectation, similar to wrapping paper."
