#WorkOfTheWeek: Guerrilla Girls, 'Dearest Art Collector' 1986, Tate collection
The Guerrilla Girls are a group of anonymous American female artists who dub themselves the ‘conscience of the art world’. Since forming in 1984 the Guerrilla Girls have been working to expose sexual and racial discrimination in the cultural sphere. In this portfolio of posters they appropriated the visual language of advertising, specifically fly-posting, pasting these up in the middle of the night. The group’s members protect their identities by wearing gorilla masks in public and by assuming pseudonyms taken from deceased female figures such as the writer Gertrude Stein and Frida Kahlo. #GuerrillaGirls
