In popular Christian imagination, the quintessential #Christmas story of the Nativity, or the birth of Jesus, involves the infant Jesus, his mother Mary, and her husband Joseph in a humble manger. However, many Medieval and Renaissance depictions shift focus away from the “nuclear family” to present a much more matriarchal view of childbirth. This 16th-century oak sculpture highlights the tenderness of intergenerational female solidarity between Mary, her own mother, and her young midwife—quite a fitting celebration for a Christmas Day in our #YearofYesBKM. #MerryChristmas!
