We were so thrilled to have been able to donate a percentage of our Big Sur Collection sales to @oceanconservancy this year in support of all the incredible work they do! We met with them to talk about best practices for sustaining marine wildlife and our environment as a whole, including what steps we can personally take as a business and donor. Many actions they take are with their movement to prevent trash flow into the Ocean. Plastic pollution is a MAJOR problem globally and is increasing. The consequences are not only detrimental to the environment but devastating to sea life ingesting plastics as they mistake it for food. Plastics have been found in the stomachs of 135 species of seabirds from around the world and contamination rates in birds have increased from about 26% historically to approximately 65% today. 52% of the world's sea turtles have also ingested plastic. Especially this time of year with holiday shopping, the use of plastic bags increases, as well as the rate in which they are discarded. All of us as individuals need to be more mindful about our trash, plastic use and where it ends up. Whether we dispose of it properly or not, there are so many steps along the way contributing to this bad habit. We'd like to encourage you to be especially mindful about trash and plastic bag use this season, as we are also working to do so as individuals and as a company. Thankfully for the health of our Oceans, @oceanconservancy also takes action in their International Coastal Cleanup. With nearly 800,000 volunteers in 2015, more then 18 million pounds of trash was collected. Find out ways you can help or donate on their website, www.oceanconservancy.org where you can also find their 2016 Ocean Trash Index with data collected during the 2015 International Coastal Cleanup. And it's thanks to you that we were able to donate $10,000 last month, and that even better, we were able to meet the deadline for matched donation from a benefactor for a total of $20,000. #coralandtusk #oceanconservancy #coralandtuskbigsurcollection
