From @paolantonelli, curator of the upcoming exhibition "Items: Is Fashion Modern?": Which sari best represents India in the world in the 20th century? Is it be the purple silk number worn by Madhuri Dixit in the 1994 Bollywood blockbuster ‘Hum Aapke Hai Kaun’ (What Am I for You?), or the neatly pressed and starched, handspun and handwoven khadi sari that was Indira Gandhi's trademark--not only a style, but also a political statement? Should it be Varanasi brocade or a Gujarati tie-and-dye bridal sari? A mundu from Kerala?
One thing is clear: the sari is an amazing feat of design, universal and still infinitely personal and customizable, global and local, intimate and political, ancient but also susceptible to the most contemporary influences, sustainable and precious. And I'm sure it still has one more hundred lives--at least--to live.
