Ancient Egyptian civilization was created by indigenous Africans who laid the foundation for this complex culture during the fourth millennium BCE. By 3000 BCE this culture had spread from its origins in southern Egypt to the Mediterranean coast. Evidence of this can be seen with this jar which was excavated from a grave in southern Egypt. Southeast from this site, similar designs were found in desert rocks dating from 500 years earlier. Later the same designs would spread northward into Egypt's Delta region.
