This image of a Canadian beaver skull was taken as part of the Mammal Tree of Life project.
Many scientists at the Museum are working with other researchers in the U.S. and internationally to determine how mammal species, both living and extinct, are related to each other. Using images like this, as well as web applications for databasing such as MorphoBank, the Tree of Life team studies mammals by comparing their morphology, or the physical characteristics of their appearance, from tiny details of teeth to bones of the skull and entire skeleton.
