Il 27 settembre 1979 si apre la mostra del collettivo Stars – di cui Ai Weiwei è uno dei fondatori – sui marciapiedi della China Art Gallery di Pechino. Dichiarata illegale il giorno successivo, viene chiusa il 29. Il collettivo auspica espressioni artistiche diverse dal realismo socialista d’influenza sovietica imposto dal governo.

Ai Weiwei Story: Beginning 27 September 1979
On 27 September 1979 the Stars collective, of which Ai Weiwei is one of the founder members, holds a collective exhibition on the pavement of the China Art Gallery in Beijing. The exhibition is declared illegal the next day and forced to close on 29 September. The collective wished to see the development of artistic expressions different from the socialist realism of Soviet inspiration enforced by the government.
