Hi, my name is Jody MacDonald (@jodymacdonaldphoto) and I am taking over Leica’s IG account, today. I’ll be sharing images using the Leica X-U from my recent adventures with the sea gypsies of Borneo known as the Bajau Laut meaning “man of the sea.” The Bajau Laut are some of the last remaining sea nomads who have lived at sea for centuries navigating an expanse of ocean between the Phillipines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Here a young Bajau man tows his dugout canoe while fishing for octopus with a manmade octopus decoy. We would spend many days spearfishing, swimming for up to 5-6 hours at a time. Their gear is all handmade, even the goggles and swim fins which are made from materials found in the ocean or onshore and they can hold their breath free-driving for up to five minutes at a time.
