The nation's first offshore wind farm will get fired up this fall. Five massive wind turbines just off the south end of Block Island, RI will have the ability to power 17,000 homes (the whole island and a little more). The 30-megawatt project, estimated to cost $300 million, is leading the way in the alternatives/wind revolution; it's a small scale illustration of what can be done with #windpower. @DeepwaterWind, which is funding the farm, hopes to build 200 more turbines to produce as much as 1,000 megawatts of power and says the sky's the limit after that.
