Sydney-born swimming legend Annette Kellerman (1886-1975) became a world-champion swimmer, pioneered women’s high diving, popularised the women’s one-piece swimsuit, and later became a vaudeville entertainer and a star of American silent films. ??? We love this gorgeous shot of her as a mermaid in the Neptune's Daughter (1914). In this film she became the first woman to swim in a mermaid costume in a film. Her movies were like fairy stories in which her mermaid character was an action hero.
