Vanished beneath the waters of the Mediterranean, the lost ancient Egyptian cities of Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus were recently rediscovered.

Preserved and buried under the sea for over a thousand years, the stunning objects that have been excavated are currently on display in our #SunkenCities exhibition. They reveal the deep connections between the great ancient civilisations of Egypt and Greece.

This is the head of a Ptolemaic (ancient Greek) king, depicted as a pharaoh, which was discovered in Canopus.
