As a child, David Korins (@davidkorins) constantly rearranged his bedroom furniture. “I spent many years refining the ground plan,” says the 39-year-old creative director, who is up for his first Tony Award nomination (@thetonyawards) in set design for “Hamilton: An American Musical.” The show has already won a Pulitzer Prize, is nominated for 16 Tonys — the most for any Broadway show — and tonight, the cast will dedicate its performance to the families of Orlando. David says, “A lot of what we talk about in the show is legacy, how the story goes on beyond us. When you tell a story with humanity, it carries on forever.”
In “Satisfied,” one of David’s favorite numbers from the show, lanterns fly in a swirling motion, creating an “abstract star field” onstage. “At some point during every show, someone in the audience is looking at something that is not the star,” he explains. They’re experiencing what he calls “the eyelashes of the stage,” the subtle details David’s team spends so much time perfecting.
