Over the last forty years, The Met’s collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy has grown to be one of the greatest in the world. On view through October 11, “Masterpieces of Chinese Painting” highlights the gems of the permanent collection. The second rotation of works in the exhibition is now on view.
This handscroll illustrates the story of Wang Xizhi ( 303 – 361), the calligraphy master of legendary fame and a practitioner of Daoist alchemy, who was said to derive inspiration from natural forms such as the graceful neck movements of geese.
