Happy almost May Day! ? This 1942 photograph from our Scurlock Studio collection shows a young girl being crowned May Queen.

Did you know that relatively few Americans celebrated May Day until the late 19th century? Wealthy reformers spearheaded the holiday's resurgence as a traditional spring holiday, organizing festivals at women's colleges and encouraging educators to hold special dances for their students. By the 20th century, May Day celebrations were a common sight in the nation's schools and parks.
