The Museum’s collections are able to represent diverse cultures from the ancient world right up to the present day, including the ongoing acquisition of modern and contemporary art.
This photographic print is by Saudi Arabian artist Manal Dowayan. Her work encompasses black and white photography, sculpture, video, sound, neon and large-scale participatory installations. Her artistic works often focus on the state of Saudi women and their representation. This 2006 work is titled ‘I am a Saudi Citizen’ and depicts the artist posing in profile with the modern Saudi Arabian flag covering her head, a fine mesh over her face and traditional metal bracelets.
A major new gallery of the Islamic world will open in 2018, showcasing the Museum’s world-class collection from early Islamic art to contemporary works.
