This Neanderthal mother is teaching her child how to use a stone tool to scrape a hide and poke holes in it to make clothing. This is the first species that we know of that grew up over an extended period of time: with long periods of infancy and childhood.
Neanderthals were our closest now-extinct relatives; they overlapped with earlier members of our own species (Homo sapiens) in Europe and Asia and genetic evidence shows that our species occasionally interbred.
At least once a year I try to snap a photo of my son with this sculpture—here he is at about this time last year and the year before.
One of the reasons we think it takes a long time for humans (and Neanderthals!) to mature is because they have to learn to be members of very rich and complex social groups. -Briana
