Manpack Global Positioning System (GPS) Receiver. GPS became operational in 1978. Its military usefulness was demonstrated during Operation Desert Storm (1991), when coalition troops with receivers were able to navigate quickly and with great precision in the relatively featureless desert, thus having a significant tactical advantage over Iraqi forces. A unit like this one weighed 17 pounds and cost $45,000.

On February 28, 1991, President George H. W. Bush laid out conditions for a permanent cease-fire in Operation Desert Storm. The Los Angeles Times quoted President Bush as saying, "Kuwait is liberated. Iraq's army is defeated. Our military objectives are met." In honor of the 25th anniversary of the end of Operation Desert Storm, here are three very different objects related to it. ?? #DesStorm25 #DesertStorm #MilitaryHistory
