Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! During the month of February, we will highlight the artistic achievements of artists of African descent in the Met’s collection. Henry Ossawa Tanner was the first African American artist to achieve international acclaim. Tanner developed an increasingly painterly, highly personal style based on empirical observation and inner vision.
