Men prepared for possible service in World War I at training schools like the one in Plattsburg, New York. But men weren't the only ones preparing. Women took classes on national defense, good citizenship, and American history at schools like the First National Service School in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The camp opened in May 1916 to great fanfare. President Wilson and high-ranking officials in the Navy, Marine Corps, and Army attended the opening ceremony.

By the spring of 1919, nearly 4,000 women representing 43 states had graduated from the First National Service School. The large-scale encampments were referred to as the "female Plattsburg" movement.
