Today in 1917: The National Women's Party begins silent picketing outside the White House. The "silent sentinels" were the first people to picket the White House. In this photograph, a police paddy wagon can be seen amongst a crowd as White House picketers are arrested.

The party members' purple, white, and gold banners asked President Woodrow Wilson, "Mr. President what will you do for woman suffrage?" and "Mr. President how long must women wait for liberty?" Protesting is just one way in which #AmericaParticipates, our theme for 2016.
