"Finder please return to Abraham & Strauss, Brooklyn, N.Y." This 1920s-30s department store charge coin—a predecessor to the charge card—has a unique number on the back that corresponds to a shopper's household account.
Americans put these charge coins to use as incomes rose and it became more socially acceptable to spend money on nonessential items. By the 1920s, sales of ready-to-wear clothing were higher than ever before.
