Empress Elisabeth of Austria lost her life 117 years ago today on 10 September 1898 in Geneva, Switzerland. The empress was fatally stabbed by the anarchist Luigi Lucheni on her way to catch a steamship bound for Montreux. Elisabeth's corset was laced so tight that she was initially unaware of her own injury; she lost consciousness upon reaching the boat, where her clothing was eventually loosened to help with her breathing. Her wound was discovered, but by then it was too late. ?? Sisi is shown here during her coronation as Queen of Hungary on June 1867 wearing a gown designed by Charles Worth. ?? Such an interesting, albeit tragic, figure. She was so beautiful, although if she lived today I don't doubt she would've been diagnosed with anorexia.
