Though simple in form, Tessy King’s (@tessyking) objects are laborious to create. For her enamel pieces she draws a shape onto a flat sheet of copper, cuts it out, cleans it and finally sprinkles enamel from a sieve onto the metal before firing it in the kiln. Then she repeats the enameling process in multiple layers until the colors look just right. The final product is often a brightly colored combination of basic shapes. “I see my objects as playful things that you can place in a space and rearrange,” says the Melbourne, Australia-based artist, whose work also includes ceramics. “My grandfather was a carpenter, so growing up I was surrounded by wooden toys, like colored blocks and puzzles that when pieced together created a three-dimensional object.” Despite the process, for Tessy it’s a labor of love. “With enameling you see the colors change each time,” she says. “I get absorbed in watching them evolve from start to finish.”
