Women and girls leave the base every day, walking for hours to collect firewood which they sell to supplement food handouts given to around 118,000 people registered at the base. The expeditions are risky as they face ambush, rape and abduction by armed men who lurk in the surrounding swamps and forests. Some are held indefinitely, tied up with hundreds of others in secret rape camps -- an atrocity in South Sudan's brutal 21-month conflict that has remained hidden until now.
