Today in 1869: Ives McGaffey patents a "sweeping machine." This vacuum cleaner is from 1926-1929. It was the first of its kind to feature an aluminum body, an on/off switch (oooh!), and the agitator brushroll—an innovation that used metal beater strips to vibrate pieces of dirt from carpets.
The vacuum was marketed as a labor-saving device for middle class women. (The ad showed a chic flapper of the late 1920s.) Of course, standards for cleanliness also rose.
How have chores changed in your lifetime? Do you remember how grandma cleaned up?
